Teddy Sheringham, a former striker for Manchester United and England, has expressed his opinion on Alejandro Garnacho’s decision to leave the club and join Chelsea in the summer transfer window. According to Sheringham, Garnacho made a mistake by closing the door on his time at Old Trafford and moving to Stamford Bridge.
Garnacho made a significant impact during his time at Manchester United, breaking into the first team under Erik ten Hag in 2022 and becoming an essential player for the Red Devils. However, his tenure at the club came to an abrupt end after a disagreement with Ruben Amorim, who deemed him surplus to requirements. This led to a surprising move to Chelsea, where he was signed for a relatively low fee of £40 million.
Despite joining Chelsea, Garnacho has yet to score for the Blues, though he has shown flashes of his potential, particularly in a Champions League match against Jose Mourinho’s Benfica. However, Sherringham remains skeptical about whether Garnacho will succeed at his new club and believes that the winger should have tried to turn his situation around at Manchester United instead of leaving.
‘I think Alejandro Garnacho is a very talented player, but only time will tell whether he’s able to be a success at Chelsea,’ Sheringham said in an interview with Coin Poker.
He continued: ‘He will have been disappointed not to get off the bench in the game at Old Trafford. He made a big move in leaving Manchester United for Chelsea, and it’s not one I would have advised him to make if I were a part of his team.
‘When you’re at United you have to try your utmost to make it work. It is the biggest club in the world, so you won’t be leaving for a better club, and the opportunity to come back won’t be there, especially with the manner in which he left and the way the fans have reacted to it.’

Garnacho has not publicly discussed his departure from Manchester United in detail, but he has hinted that his final months at the club were challenging. In an interview with TNT Sports earlier this month, he said, ‘I think it was a difficult moment there, just training alone. But I have nothing bad to say about the club, my old club Manchester United. It was just a bad moment in life but now I’m very happy to be here.’
Garnacho was not selected for the Argentina national team during the international break but is expected to return to action when Chelsea faces Nottingham Forest next Saturday.
