Pope Leo XIV’s Visit to Italy: A Call for Openness and Solidarity
Pope Leo XIV recently expressed his gratitude to Italy for its efforts in combating human trafficking while emphasizing the importance of maintaining an open and inclusive approach towards migrants. His visit to Rome included a formal meeting with Italian President Sergio Mattarella, highlighting the deep historical and spiritual ties between the Vatican and Italy.
During the ceremony, the Pope made a symbolic journey across Rome to the Quirinal Palace, where he met with the President. The event was marked by traditional pomp and circumstance, with the presidential horse honour guard escorting him into the palace courtyard. This ritual is a rite of passage for every new Pope, symbolizing the unity between the Church and the state.
The Pope wore his formal red cape and brocaded stole, reflecting the solemnity of the occasion. He praised Italy for its “generous assistance” to migrants and its ongoing efforts to tackle human trafficking. In his speech, he encouraged the country to continue fostering an attitude of openness and solidarity.
“At the same time, I wish to emphasise the importance of constructive integration of newcomers into the values and traditions of Italian society, so that the mutual gift realised in this encounter of peoples may truly enrich and benefit all,” he said.
This message came at a time when Italy plays a central role in Europe’s migration debate. Due to its proximity to North Africa, the country has become a primary destination for smuggling operations originating from Libya and Tunisia. The right-wing government led by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has prioritized stricter measures against illegal migration, including repatriating migrants and sending them to detention facilities in Albania, as well as prosecuting alleged smugglers.
Meloni and her hard-line Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini were present in the audience during the meeting, which took place in a gilded reception room of the palace. Palace guards stood at attention, underscoring the significance of the event.

Italy’s approach to migration often contrasts with the previous Pope Francis’ advocacy for wealthier nations to welcome, defend, and integrate newcomers. Pope Leo XIV echoed this sentiment in his recent teachings, reinforcing the need for compassion and inclusion. The meeting on Tuesday served as a reminder of the close relationship between Italy and the Vatican.

The location of the meeting, the Quirinale Palace, further highlights the intertwined history between the two entities. For centuries, the palace served as the summer residence of popes until 1870, when Rome was annexed into the newly unified Kingdom of Italy. After years of tension, Italy and the Holy See restored diplomatic relations in 1929 through the Lateran Treaty, which remains in effect today.
This historic connection continues to shape the dynamic between the Vatican and the Italian government, influencing policies and public discourse on migration and social integration. As Pope Leo XIV emphasized, the challenge lies in balancing security with compassion, ensuring that the values of openness and solidarity remain at the forefront of national priorities.
