Ronaldo’s Historic Achievement in World Cup Qualifying
Cristiano Ronaldo has etched his name into the history books by becoming the all-time top scorer in World Cup qualifying matches. At 40 years old, the Portuguese football legend showcased his enduring talent during a recent match against Hungary, where he played a pivotal role in a thrilling 2-2 draw.
Ronaldo opened the scoring with a remarkable display of anticipation and movement, capitalizing on a powerful cross from Nelson Semedo. His first goal came at a crucial moment, putting Portugal ahead. He then added a second goal from a deep delivery by Nuno Mendes, demonstrating his clinical finishing ability once again.
This double strike elevated Ronaldo’s total to 41 World Cup qualifying goals, surpassing the previous record held by former Guatemala striker Carlos Ruiz, who had 39. Ronaldo’s achievement places him well ahead of other notable players, including his long-time rival Lionel Messi, who has scored 36 World Cup qualifying goals for Argentina.

Ali Daei of Iran is next in line with 35 goals, followed by Poland’s Robert Lewandowski with 32. Ronaldo’s overall career goal tally stands at an impressive 948, with 143 of those coming for the Portuguese national team. This makes him the leading goal-scorer in football history, with Messi trailing closely behind at 875.
Despite his age, Ronaldo continues to be a dominant force on the pitch. During a recent event in his homeland, he expressed his desire to continue playing for “a few more years,” with a dream of making a fairytale appearance at the World Cup in the United States next summer.
He said: “I think I still have a lot to give to the national team and to football. I want to keep playing for a few more years, not many, to be honest. I want to thank all my teammates for learning from all of them, and even from this younger generation. For me, it is a privilege to be with you. Our goal is to win the next two games and be at the World Cup. The World Cup will come soon.”

He continued: “We have to think solely and exclusively about the present, but with an eye on the future. It would be a dream. But step by step. People, especially my family, say to me: ‘It’s time for you to stop. You’ve done it all. Why do you want to score 1,000 goals?’ But I don’t think so. I think I’m still doing good things, I’m helping my club and the national team, and why not continue? I’m sure that when it’s over, I’ll feel fulfilled, because I gave it my all. I know I don’t have many years left, but the few I have, I’m trying to enjoy them to the fullest.”
Ronaldo’s determination and passion for the game show no signs of waning. Many believe he could continue to defy time and reach the milestone of 1,000 career goals. His relentless pursuit of success raises questions about whether he can achieve a historic sixth World Cup or if his ‘astonishing feat’ of 1,000 goals remains just out of reach as he approaches 40.
Could Ronaldo’s insatiable hunger for success lead him to another 100 goals and an astronomical 1,000 career goals before retiring? Only time will tell, but one thing is certain—his legacy as one of the greatest footballers of all time is already secured.
