Virgin Australia Updates Carry-On Baggage Rules for 2024
Virgin Australia has announced significant changes to its carry-on baggage policies, which will take effect from February 2. These updates are expected to bring relief to many passengers who have long complained about the restrictions on the weight and number of bags they can bring on board.
Under the new rules, economy class passengers will be allowed to carry one item in the overhead locker, weighing up to 8kg, along with a personal item such as a purse, camera, or laptop bag. This is a shift from the current policy, where passengers could bring two carry-on bags, but the combined weight must not exceed 7kg.
Business class passengers will also see changes, with the allowance of two carry-on bags weighing a total of 14kg. One of these bags may weigh up to 8kg, and a personal item will still be permitted.
Chris Snook, Virgin Australia’s chief operations officer, stated that these changes were made based on feedback from both staff and customers. “These changes are based on team member and guest feedback and will help deliver an enhanced onboard experience, while keeping the boarding process simple and consistent,” he said. He added that the goal is to make flights more comfortable for passengers, ensuring a smoother start to their journey.
The airline also provided details on how the new rules apply to families traveling with infants. A collapsible stroller counts as one standard carry-on item and must fit within the dimensions of L56cm by W36cm by H23cm. Families may also bring an additional small personal item, such as a nappy bag for essential baby products. Three infant items can be checked in for free.
The announcement has been met with mixed reactions from travelers. Many Australians welcomed the change on social media, expressing hope that the new rules will be enforced effectively. One Reddit user commented, “Yeah needs enforcement if you ask me. I just want my modest bag above my head.” Another noted, “Too many people trying their luck it also slows getting on and off the plane.”
Some passengers shared their own experiences with carry-on luggage. One individual wrote, “GOOD! Sick of people taking on luggage that should be checked in and we gotta put our small packs at our feet. Should have done this ages ago.” Another questioned why some people would choose to carry heavy bags when they could simply check them and enjoy a more convenient travel experience.
“I don’t take up any more space than I actually need. I usually fly Economy X, and my only carry on is a small leather backpack with my laptop, headphones, purse, etc., which fits neatly under the seat in front,” one traveler shared. “The only time I ever need an overhead bin is if I’m in an exit or bulkhead row and can’t stow my bag under the seat in front.”
The updated rules apply not only to domestic flights but also to short-haul international trips to destinations such as Bali, Fiji, and New Zealand.
With these changes, Virgin Australia aims to improve the overall passenger experience while maintaining efficiency during boarding and deplaning. The airline has also emphasized that the new guidelines are in place to ensure a fair and consistent approach for all travelers.
