Is This the Most Overpriced Semi-Detached Home in Britain?

A Homeowner’s £6 Million Listing Sparks Confusion and Debate

A homeowner in Brent has stirred up both confusion and controversy by listing their semi-detached property for £6 million. This price is significantly higher than the average home on the road, which typically sells for around £5.5 million less. The property, last sold at auction for £1.675 million in 2021, has drawn attention from neighbors and internet users alike.

Residents were taken aback when they learned of the high asking price. One neighbor described it as “delusional from the owners.” The house, located near Brondesbury Park station, has been recently refurbished and spans three floors with five bedrooms. It includes modern amenities such as eaves storage and a walk-in dressing room for the master bedroom.

According to agents Cluttons, the home was “designed from the ground up with an uncompromising commitment to quality and detail,” resulting in a property that blends architectural brilliance with everyday living. The listing also mentions approved planning permission for a studio and swimming pool, offering potential for further development.

Lush images of the property show a sleek modern space with trendy furniture and well-maintained lawns. However, the agent admits that the photos have been “staged with furnishings to provide a more appealing presentation of space.”

Property marketer Purplebricks considers the £6 million price tag optimistic. The average property in the area sells for around £536,480, although some houses in the same street have been priced between £2-3 million. The borough has also seen a decline in property values, with the average home losing around £26,157 in value over the past year.

The high asking price has caused consternation among locals and potential buyers, who have called it “overpriced” and even a joke. One anonymous neighbor laughed when told about the price, saying, “That is a joke, what are they smoking!” He recalled the house being a “bog standard house like all the others in this road” before the renovations.

Another neighbor commented, “I mean yes, it is a bit of a silly price when you consider the area – but that’s London now.” They noted that demand is outstripping supply, with foreign money inflating prices. “Good luck to them to be honest, if it does sell I might put my own house up for it!”

When the listing reached the Reddit channel ‘Spotted on RightMove,’ it received a mixed response. One user said, “I don’t care how much they’ve done or how much sq m’s they’ve added it’s an ordinary semi house.” Another agreed, “Whatever they have done to it, I don’t see how they could justify asking anything like that kind of price hike!”

This situation is not unique. Similar controversies have arisen in other areas, such as Hove, where an elderly couple listed their home for nearly £2 million over the average sale price of their street. The house, which backs onto high-rise flats and sits on a busy road, drew shock and disbelief from residents.

The Hove property, valued at £2.5 million, faces criticism for its location and view. Despite its seaside setting, the house overlooks high-rise flats and has a high crime rate. The couple, in their late 80s, wants to downsize away from the seafront.

Neighborhood reactions have been mixed. Some admire the couple’s efforts to renovate the home, while others question the price. A resident remarked, “It’s incredible how much house prices have risen in the last 15 years but I’d never expect a house to be on the market for so much – it’s a King’s ransom.”

Online viewers have also raised concerns about the practicality of the home’s layout. One comment questioned the need for two dressing rooms and a large bathroom, while another criticized the lack of privacy due to the surrounding buildings.
