Key Highlights from the Asian Lung Cancer Conference 2025
The Asian Lung Cancer Conference 2025 brought together a diverse group of professionals in the field of oncology, including scientists, medical experts, and healthcare officials. This three-day event, held from October 9–11, was co-organised by the Vietnam Medical Association, the Vietnam Young Physicians Association, and the World Association for Lung Cancer Research. Over 500 participants attended, highlighting the significance of the conference in addressing lung cancer challenges in Vietnam and across Asia.
Focus on Preventive Medicine and Early Detection
One of the main themes discussed during the conference was the importance of preventive medicine. Prof. Dr. Tran Van Thuan, Deputy Minister of Health and Chairman of the National Medical Council, emphasized that Vietnam is prioritizing early detection and screening programs, particularly for high-risk groups. He highlighted the need to expand these initiatives to improve outcomes and reduce the burden of lung cancer.
Thuan also outlined the Ministry of Health’s (MoH) four key directions for healthcare development up to 2030. These include:
- Strengthening preventive medicine and expanding community-based screening for lung cancer
- Promoting research and application of advanced technologies such as AI, molecular biology, and genetics
- Developing high-quality human resources through international collaboration
- Building an interconnected care system that ensures equitable access to quality healthcare services
Advancements in Technology and Treatment
Another major focus of the conference was the integration of advanced science and technology in lung cancer treatment. Experts discussed the role of innovations like low-dose spiral CT scans for early detection, proton radiotherapy, and robotic endoscopic surgery. The use of artificial intelligence (AI) in both screening and personalized treatment plans was also a key topic.
Dr. Karen Kelly, CEO of the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer (IASLC), described the conference as more than just a scientific event. She emphasized that it served as a platform for global collaboration, where experts could exchange knowledge, share clinical experiences, and strengthen partnerships to combat lung cancer effectively.
Comprehensive Sessions and Collaborative Efforts
The conference featured 30 sessions, including seminars and panel discussions, with over 100 detailed reports covering various aspects of lung cancer. Topics ranged from prevention and early screening to diagnosis and treatment. Special attention was given to rare thoracic cancers, such as pleural, mediastinal, and small-cell lung cancer, reflecting a broader commitment to comprehensive cancer care.
The event also provided an opportunity for Vietnamese doctors and international experts to collaborate on clinical research, data sharing, and training. These efforts are expected to lead to joint initiatives aimed at improving early detection and treatment outcomes for patients.
Impact on Lung Cancer Care in Vietnam
With its strong emphasis on scientific content and international cooperation, the conference marked a significant milestone in Vietnam’s ongoing efforts to reduce the impact of lung cancer. By fostering collaboration and promoting innovative approaches, the event contributes to the goal of enhancing the quality of care for patients across the country.
Ongoing Developments in Lung Cancer Research
Several other developments were highlighted during the conference. AstraZeneca, a leading pharmaceutical company, continues to advance its lung cancer portfolio, offering new treatment options for patients. Additionally, cancer immunotherapy has emerged as a promising approach, providing hope for improved outcomes in lung cancer treatment.
