James Acaster’s live meltdown named ‘TV moment of the year’

A Comedian’s Outburst on Live Television

A British comedian caused a stir on Saturday Kitchen after losing a food vote against Ed Gamble, leading to a dramatic outburst that left the set in disarray. The incident has sparked a mix of amusement and discomfort among viewers, with many taking to social media to share their reactions.

The event began with a vote asking audiences to choose between tapas or tirimasu. Ed Gamble’s tapas option was selected over James Acaster’s Panatone Tirimasu. This format change was unusual for the show, which typically asks viewers to pick between their version of food heaven or hell. Instead, host Matt Tebbutt had audiences choose between the two comedians’ heavenly picks.

As the results came in, James Acaster was visibly upset, reacting with frustration. Climbing from his chair, he flipped the wreath on the table and punched the decorative polar bear behind him. He then attacked the set’s Christmas tree, while Matt and the other guests, including a cackling Ed, laughed at the scene.

Reactions from Viewers

The aftermath of James’s tantrum saw viewers taking to social media to express their shock. Some praised the moment as a highlight of the year, with one user writing, “James Acaster providing a late entrant to TV moment of the year on Saturday Kitchen.” Another commented, “If anyone hasn’t seen this please do so. TV moment of the year by far.”

However, not all viewers were amused. Some criticized the behavior, with one user describing it as “atrocious” and another calling the comedian “worse than a 2 year old.” Others suggested that James should be banned from the show, calling it “really uncomfortable viewing.”

One viewer even questioned the reactions, saying, “Have I manifested into an alternate universe, why are all of the comments acting like he just killed someone’s mum in front of them?”

A History of Meltdowns

This isn’t the first time James Acaster has had a meltdown on television. He is perhaps best known for his 2019 appearance on The Great Celebrity Bake Off for Stand Up 2 Cancer, where he suffered a breakdown over flapjacks.

During the show, James attempted to make cherry bakewell inspired flapjacks but ended up with a gooey mess. His now-iconic exchange with judges Paul Hollywood and Prue Leith included the line, “Started making it, had a breakdown, bon appetit.”

In his 2024 standup special, Hecklers Welcome, James revealed that he was suffering from a 36-hour jetlag during the Bake Off filming, which contributed to his disastrous bake. He also shared his thoughts on the stress of shows like Strictly, stating that he wouldn’t last long on such a high-pressure program.

The Show’s Schedule

Saturday Kitchen airs weekly at 10am on BBC One. The show continues to attract a wide audience, with its mix of cooking, humor, and celebrity appearances.
