A Vision for the Future of IIUM
Pahang’s Tengku Ampuan, Tunku Azizah Aminah Maimunah Iskandariah, has recently voiced her support for the development of International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM). She emphasized the need for increased government funding to enhance the university’s infrastructure and overall environment. According to her, a well-maintained campus can significantly contribute to the intellectual growth of students who study there.
As the university approaches its 43rd anniversary, Tunku Azizah suggested that it might be time for some improvements. “Perhaps it is time for a little facelift, a touch of make-up here and there, and maybe even a hint of ‘botox’ to make this university look young, fresh and radiant again,” she remarked during the recent IIUM convocation.
She highlighted the importance of a beautiful campus in nurturing beautiful minds. “Investing in IIUM is investing in Malaysia’s future,” she said. As the ceremonial head of IIUM, Tunku Azizah expressed her desire to be more actively involved in the university rather than just attending annual convocation ceremonies. Her role comes with a deep sense of responsibility, as well as affection and commitment to the institution.
“I want to walk beside you, to listen to you, and to contribute meaningfully to the future of this institution that I love. My door is always open,” she stated. Tunku Azizah also emphasized the critical role of IIUM and its lecturers in shaping the next generation. This means that the university must focus on hiring, retaining, and nurturing the best academic staff.
She pointed out that IIUM should not solely rely on rankings but should instead measure its success by the character, integrity, and excellence of the people it produces. Therefore, she stressed that there can be no room for mediocrity or unethical behavior within the university. The responsibility it bears is too great, and the future of students is too precious.
“This is why we must uphold the highest standards, and why there is no room for anyone who diminishes the dignity of IIUM. Let us restore its honour as the most sought-after, respected and prestigious university in Malaysia and among the finest in the world,” she added.
Knowledge, Courage, and Compassion
During the convocation, Tunku Azizah addressed the graduands, reminding them that their knowledge must be accompanied by action, courage, and compassion. She highlighted the plight of the Palestinian people as an example of how knowledge should lead to meaningful change.
Although each graduate may feel they can only make a small impact individually, Tunku Azizah encouraged them to recognize the power of collective effort. “Individually we are a drop, but together we are an ocean, and an ocean can reshape the world,” she said.
She reminded the graduates that their degree is not just an achievement but a responsibility entrusted to them. “Carry it with humility and dignity. Use it to uplift, to defend and to heal,” she advised. Tunku Azizah also urged them to remember their humble beginnings and to give back to society.
“Education is not a privilege but something entrusted to you,” she concluded. Her words served as a powerful reminder of the responsibilities that come with knowledge and the potential for positive change that each graduate holds.
