Benicia’s Christmas Parade & Market Lights Up the Holidays

Benicia Decked Out in Holiday Cheer: Parade and Market Draw Hundreds Despite Chilly Temperatures

Benicia, California, was abuzz with festive spirit this past Saturday as the annual Christmas Parade and Holiday Market transformed First Street into a winter wonderland, albeit without the snow. Hundreds of residents braved the crisp, 42-degree weather, bundling up in cozy sweaters, beanies, and Santa hats to partake in the cherished community tradition.

The air, though cold, was filled with warmth and merriment as spectators lined the streets, eagerly awaiting the procession. The Benicia Police Department and Fire Department led the way, followed by the man of the hour himself, Santa Claus, all spreading infectious Christmas cheer.

“It’s amazing to see everyone come out, even with the cold,” remarked Gretchen Burgess, a local attendee. “You know, I joked that if it started raining, it would probably just turn into snow given how chilly it was!” Her sentiment was echoed by many who found joy in the shared experience.

Laurie Wachob, the executive director of Benicia Main Street, the organization behind the event, expressed her delight at the turnout and the palpable sense of community. “I think little community events like this just bring everybody together,” Wachob said. “I saw a lot of smiles, a lot of laughter and a lot of fun. It warms my heart to see that.”

This year marked the 31st consecutive year that Benicia Main Street has hosted the beloved parade and the subsequent holiday market. Christina Strawbridge, President of the Benicia Main Street Board of Directors, highlighted the event’s significance for the local economy and community cohesion.

“We have the staples that usually want to come out and then some new folks,” Strawbridge noted. “It’s good for our businesses. We do the holiday market to keep people down here after the parade.” This strategic placement of the market ensures that the festive atmosphere continues long after the last float has passed.

The parade route was a vibrant display of local pride, featuring not only city services and Santa but also various community groups. Participants included the Benicia Girl Scouts, Food is Free Bay Area, St. Dominic’s Catholic Church, and the enthusiastic cheer teams and marching bands from Benicia Middle and High Schools.

“My favorite part is seeing the kids so excited,” Strawbridge shared, her eyes lighting up with the memory. “We had Santa and Mrs. Claus this year, and that was really fun for them. Their joy is contagious.”

Following the parade’s conclusion outside SIPS Bottle Emporium, the crowd naturally gravitated towards the bustling Holiday Market. A vibrant array of tents lined the street, offering a diverse selection of goods and treats. Shoppers browsed stalls brimming with handmade crafts, cozy scarves, and delicious refreshments, all designed to combat the winter chill and lift spirits.

The market provided a perfect opportunity for attendees to support local artisans and small businesses. “That’s what we’re about at Benicia Main Street,” Wachob emphasized. “We’re here to support downtown and just bring the community together.”

The sentiment of supporting local was strongly felt by attendees like Burgess. “There’s no smaller business than those businesses down there,” she added, gesturing towards the market stalls. “You just do not get better from grassroots support than shopping at the farmer’s market.” The event truly underscored the value of community-driven commerce and the enduring appeal of local traditions. The success of the day, despite the unseasonably cool weather, served as a testament to Benicia’s strong community spirit and its dedication to celebrating the holiday season together.
