Holiday Heist: Pirate Poses as Driver

English RM News — The holiday season, a time typically associated with joy and generosity, is unfortunately also a prime season for opportunistic crime. As more and more Americans rely on online shopping for their festive needs, the surge in deliveries has unfortunately led to a parallel increase in package theft. Authorities are now issuing urgent reminders for residents to stay vigilant, as thieves are increasingly posing as delivery drivers to pilfer packages left on doorsteps.

The scale of the problem is significant. According to data from the United States Postal Service (USPS), an alarming number of packages were stolen from American homes last year, with figures exceeding 58 million. With the current holiday season alone expected to see over seven billion packages delivered, law enforcement agencies, including those in Columbus, are strongly urging residents to adopt proactive measures to safeguard their purchases.

A Personal Account of Holiday Theft

The frustration and disappointment of package theft were vividly shared by Jason Kuhn, who recounted his experience to our news partners at WBNS-TV. Kuhn discovered that a package containing a Christmas gift for his wife had been stolen from his porch overnight.

“Now we’ve got to worry about things disappearing,” Kuhn lamented. He explained that the theft occurred in the early morning hours, and they didn’t immediately notice the missing package until they retrieved what they thought was their delivery, only to find it empty. This prompted them to review their security footage.

The footage from Kuhn’s Ring doorbell captured a clear image of the perpetrator. The thief was seen wearing what appeared to be an Amazon vest and, disturbingly, swapped Kuhn’s actual delivery with an empty box. The stolen item was a watch holder intended as a Christmas present for his wife.

The incident not only resulted in the loss of a gift but also created a cascade of inconveniences. “The Christmas gift was a watch holder for my wife for Christmas, and then she had to spill the beans on what it was because we’re going to have to file a claim with Etsy,” Kuhn explained, highlighting the added stress of dealing with claims and potential loss of funds. He poignantly summarized the emotional toll, stating, “The Grinch stole the surprise and the Christmas gift.”

In response to the theft, Kuhn promptly reported the incident to Etsy and indicated his intention to also file a report with the Columbus police.

Corporate Acknowledgment and Recommendations

Online retail giants are aware of the issue. Amazon, in a statement, acknowledged the problem, noting, “While the vast majority of deliveries make it to customers without issue, we recognize that, unfortunately, there are bad actors who wear look-alike apparel to steal packages from customers’ homes.” The company encourages all victims of package theft to report such incidents to local law enforcement.

Proactive Measures for Package Security

As online holiday shopping continues to escalate, Columbus police are reiterating important advice for residents. It is crucial to understand that in Ohio, package theft is classified as a felony offense. To mitigate the risk of becoming a victim, authorities recommend several preventative strategies:

  • Avoid Leaving Packages Unattended: Do not leave delivered packages on your doorstep for extended periods, especially overnight. If possible, retrieve them as soon as they are delivered.
  • Utilize Secure Delivery Options:
    • Ship to Workplace: If your employer permits, have packages delivered to your office.
    • Pickup Locations: Many retailers and shipping companies offer secure pickup points where you can retrieve your packages.
    • Trusted Neighbor: Arrange for a neighbor you trust to accept deliveries if you are unable to be home.
  • Signature Required: Opt for signature-required services for valuable items. This ensures that the package is only handed over to an authorized recipient.
  • Deliver Out of Plain View: Request that delivery drivers place packages in a less visible location, such as a side porch or behind a planter, if possible.
  • Install Security Cameras: Doorbell cameras and security systems can not only deter thieves but also provide valuable evidence if a theft occurs.
  • Track Deliveries Closely: Stay on top of your delivery notifications. If a package is marked as delivered but you don’t see it, act quickly to investigate.

By implementing these precautions, residents can significantly reduce their vulnerability to package theft and ensure that their holiday gifts and purchases arrive safely.
