Rising Indian Cricketer Yashasvi Jaiswal Hospitalized with Acute Gastroenteritis
Yashasvi Jaiswal, a promising young opening batter for India, was admitted to the hospital on Tuesday following a diagnosis of acute gastroenteritis. The incident occurred just hours after he participated in a Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy Super League match between Mumbai and Rajasthan in Pune.
The 23-year-old cricketer reportedly experienced discomfort during the high-scoring encounter but still took to the field. He managed to score 15 runs off 16 balls as his Mumbai team successfully chased a challenging target of 217, ultimately winning the match by three wickets. However, sources indicate that Jaiswal had been experiencing stomach cramps during the game, which escalated significantly post-match, necessitating immediate medical attention.
Jaiswal was promptly transported to Aditya Birla Hospital in Pimpri-Chinchwad. Medical professionals at the facility confirmed the diagnosis of acute gastroenteritis. He received intravenous medication and underwent diagnostic procedures, including ultrasound and CT scans. Doctors have since advised him to continue his prescribed medication and ensure he gets adequate rest to facilitate his recovery. As of now, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has not released an official statement regarding his condition, but further updates are anticipated in the coming days.
This health development unfolded on a day that was already abuzz with activity in the Indian cricket landscape. Many fans were keenly following the Indian Premier League (IPL) auction taking place in Abu Dhabi, where franchises were making significant investments in both established international stars and emerging domestic talent. Amidst the auction’s fanfare, Jaiswal’s hospitalization understandably sparked concern, given his increasingly vital role across all formats for the Indian national team.
Despite this recent health setback, Jaiswal has been in exceptional form leading up to this incident. His performance in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy has been noteworthy, accumulating 145 runs across three matches with an impressive average of 48.33 and a striking strike rate of 168.6. Earlier in December, he also had a highly productive One Day International (ODI) series against South Africa, where he amassed 156 runs in three matches, boasting a remarkable average of 78. This series also saw him score his maiden ODI century, a significant milestone in his burgeoning career.
In the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy match on Tuesday, Mumbai’s successful chase was significantly bolstered by the stellar performances of Ajinkya Rahane, who remained unbeaten on 72, and Sarfaraz Khan, who played a blistering innings of 73 off just 22 balls. While Mumbai secured a victory in this particular match, they were subsequently eliminated from the tournament.
With no immediate international commitments scheduled for Jaiswal and his current absence from India’s T20 International (T20I) squad, he is expected to have a sufficient recovery period. This will allow him to be fully fit and ready for India’s next series of international fixtures, which are slated to commence in mid-January. The focus will now be on his recuperation, ensuring he can return to the field in peak condition.
